Counselling Tailored to Your Individual Needs

Young people face so many unique issues that they struggle to talk about with parents or friends. That path to adulthood can be lonely, scary and confusing.

As someone who has been an advanced young person’s counsellor in Hereford for many years, working with ages 3 to 21, I know what it takes to create an environment where young people can feel genuinely supported and understood. Learning what makes each individual tick is so important; we will work closely together to come up with a way of working that is tailored to their specific needs, whatever they may be.

To book your first session of young people counselling in Hereford or online over Zoom, please give me a call on 07377720702 and we’ll arrange a meeting at a time that works for you.

How I Work With Young People

Young people usually find it hard to speak directly about their emotions. Often, they may not even know how they feel, and it can be difficult for parents to understand how to help them. Finding out what works for each child/young person is therefore my main priority. We will spend time learning what enables them to engage with and communicate their emotions. For younger children this could involve play therapy, or another creative intervention of some kind, such as sand tray work. Young people can use these creative methods to articulate how they are really feeling, which is often not possible through conventional talking therapy.

My role as a young people counsellor in Hereford is to help clients communicate how they’re feeling, without fear of judgement. Together we will get to the bottom of why they think, feel, and behave the way they do. I have worked with all kinds of issues in the past; you can read about some of them below.

Trauma

I have high levels of experience in working with children who have experienced trauma in their lives, usually through abuse – verbal, physical, and sexual. We will start by creating an environment where they feel safe, ahead of using different techniques that facilitate an exploration of their feelings around this episode and bring their emotions out into the open.

Body Dysmorphia

Many teenagers struggle with body dysmorphia and eating issues, and my practice is a completely confidential place to discuss this sensitive issue without any judgement. Talking to parents about body dysmorphia and conditions like bulimia and anorexia can sometimes feel impossible, but I am here to help them work through this issue in a way that’s comfortable to them.

Bullying

The school environment can be so stressful for children. If they are a victim of bullying, they often become isolated, excluded, or victimised. Young people tend to push down these unpleasant feelings; they might feel like nobody can help them, not even teachers. My role, therefore, is to give them all the time and space they need to open up about their experiences at school so that they feel valued, heard and safe.

Exam Stress

GCSEs and A-Levels are always stressful, and following the pandemic, where students either missed exams or had to study from home, there is even more anxiety around the pressures of being in an exam hall. Together we will develop techniques for managing this stress and provide the tools they need for navigating this period of their lives.

Low Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem is a major problem suffered by young people. The influence of social media, combined with the competitive nature of school life, causes children to often compare themselves to others and not feel good enough in some way, leading to a loss of confidence and self-worth. Our sessions will be about reconnecting children with their own innate worth, helping them to feel empowered once again.
